New Straits Times: Write Me Back Review

R&B recording artiste R. Kelly (Robert Sylvester Kelly) has done soul a good turn, again, with this 11th studio album.

Said to be a follow-up to his 2010 album Love Letter, with its throwback to the 1960s style, Write Me Back has old-school R&B with some 1970s influences.

If you like your love songs with some soul and blues, with hip-hop beats, listen to the hit single, the Marvin Gaye-ish Share My Love, or any of the other 15 tracks on this deluxe edition.

The deluxe comes with four bonus tracks including One Step Closer and Beautiful in This Mirror. The songs are all about love and relationships, gone bad or awry or on track. And even self-love, as Kelly sings in Beautiful in This Mirror:

“Your love, So 3D”. I find this funny.

He also pays tribute to the late King of Pop Michael Jackson in a few tracks, including You Are My World.

Check out Lady Sunday and the Little Richard-Elvis inspired All Rounds On Me, a rocking number.

Kelly’s R&B sound makes for a smooth ride.
