R Kelly subordinates his own image as a love man to morph into other
singers. At various times, he’s Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, Al Green,
Donny Hathaway Barry White or The Sound Of Philadelphia as he runs riot
over decades of R&B, soul, even disco. For those who want the
original R Kelly he is there in a track such as Feelin’ Single, but he
seems to be having fun, so why stop him?. He also does these
impersonations convincingly and, at a time when so much contemporary
R&B is gimmicky and overdone, Write Me Back is refreshing.
